4 Tools Everyone Should Have In Their Home

Posted on

Even if you aren't particularly handy, being able to perform basic repairs and maintenance tasks is a useful life skill. It can save you money and even prevent disaster if you're ever in a situation where a repairman can't make it to your home. In order to perform basic repairs, you need to have the right tools. Here are four tools everyone should have in their home:

1. Hammer

A hammer is an excellent tool to have around your home. You can use a hammer to reattach baseboards that have come loose. It can also be used to drive in nails that have started to work their way free from their moorings. Hammers are inexpensive and easy to store. Purchase a hammer that has a rip claw on one side so you can use it to remove nails if need be.

2. Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers have many practical applications. Even if you never do a single bit of construction, screwdrivers can allow you to maintain your appliances and even replace the batteries in small electronics. Every home needs at least two screwdrivers: a flathead and a Phillips screwdriver. Standard sized screwdrivers will allow you to perform most basic tasks. If you plan to tinker with small electronics or fix eyeglasses, you will need to purchase a smaller set of screwdrivers as well.

3. Plunger

A plunger can be used to solve many small plumbing problems. It can dislodge clogs in toilets and showers through the gentle application of pressure. A plunger can save you from having to make an emergency call to a plumber in the middle of the night. You may want to purchase at least two plungers so you can reserve one for toilet use without contaminating the other.

4. Tape Measure

A tape measure is a useful tool that doesn't take up much space. It can easily be stored in a drawer until you need it. A tape measure will allow you to purchase furniture intelligently by measuring your home first. It will allow you to ensure that all new additions to your home fit in your space.

You can get all of these tools from your local hardware store. Most can be purchased for under $20. If you're not confident in your ability to use these tools, look for classes. Many hardware stores offer free basic classes designed to impart basic skills. After you purchase your tools, it's worth your while to spend a little time familiarizing yourself with their proper usage.
